I recognized from an early age that film was powerful. I was fascinated by the narrative power of a camera lens.”

- Bree Newsome

FILMMAKER

Bree Newsome took an interest in theater and film at an early age.  By nine, she was writing plays, and at the end of her high school career, she was awarded a $40,000 scholarship by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She received her B.F.A. in Film & Television from New York University’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. While in college, she won a “Rock the Vote” public service announcement contest sponsored by MTV and NYU.

Based on her work as an undergraduate student at New York University, Newsome was invited in 2011 to serve as the first-ever Artist-in-Residence at Saatchi & Saatchi, a global creative communications and advertising company headquartered in New York.

Her short film “Wake” garnered a wide range of critical attention and awards, including the 2010 National Board of Review Student Film Award, and was named the Best Short Film in the BET Urbanworld Film Festival.

Bree is currently developing an extended performance piece, a portion of which was performed at the Monticello Summit in 2016. The Monticello Summit was a four-day public summit on the legacy of slavery and freedom in America held at the site of Thomas Jefferson’s former plantation. The celebration was a collaboration between the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the University of Virginia.
